There are not many places in Africa that can claim true international celebrity. The Giraffe Manor can. Since its founders, Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, rescued a baby giraffe named Daisy from a heavily-poached area of western Kenya in 1974, their home has become a household name among wildlife lovers worldwide and Daisy a star in her own right.Today, Daisys home has been opened to the world and provides what we feel is the very best place to begin or end your safari. Set in 120 acres of untouched indigenous forest eight miles from downtown Nairobi, The Giraffe Manor is a world away from the bustle of the city the perfect location for unwinding after your arrival, or for collecting your uplifted thoughts before bidding kwaheri to this magical land. The 1930s manor house is run by Bettys son, Rick Anderson,
and his wife Bryony, who have created the ultimate home from home with their rich blend of warm surroundings, welcoming staff, and delectable home-cooked cuisine. Meals are almost invariably interrupted by one of the manors celebrated four-legged residents, who poke their heads through the giant windows to politely request a tidbit or two!The house comprises five double bedrooms, immaculately furnished in the style of their day, with large four-poster beds, antique furnishings and striking Art Deco bathrooms. Two of the rooms convert to a family suite, while the rear of the house has a large extension ideal for older children. One of the main bedrooms boasts the original furniture of Karen Blixens guestroom, and is hung with exquisite wildlife paintings by her famous cook Kamante. Included in your stay is admission to the world-famous Giraffe Center next door, run by the African Foundation for Endangered Wildlife. The manor is a short giraffe-step from several of Nairobis other natural attractions, including Karen Blixens farmhouse and Daphne Sheldricks famous elephant orphanage.Visit the Giraffe Manor web site Exploring East Africa: |
