As one of the original homes of mankind, Kenya still possesses an inimitable ability to free one’s soul – to touch an ancient, primordial yearning that modern life has yet to prise from our being. There can be few better ways to encounter this lost magic than on a walking safari in the vast and elemental landscapes of Kenya’s Northern Frontier.

Wild Frontiers has been guiding camel safaris around the Mathews and Ndoto mountains for more than 15 years; in that time, it has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting adventures in Africa. The tailor-made expeditions are run by Helen Douglas Dufresne and her experienced Samburu crew, who are as versed in the ‘creature comforts’ of modern camping as they are in ancient tribal lore.

As its name suggests, Wild Frontiers specialises in the more remote and remarkable regions of this vast land. From the mist-shrouded forests of the Mathews range to the life-giving sands of the famous Milgis and Seiya luggas, this harsh wilderness is interspersed with hundreds of natural surprises – and thousands of local stories.

Your hosts are members of one of Africa’s last few nomadic tribes, whose wild wisdom and welcoming ways always provide for a convivial, safe and informed safari. Most travelling is done in the morning, to maximise our chances of encountering the area’s shy wildlife. After relaxing in the heat of the day, we may walk in the late afternoon or climb a rocky outcrop to experience the remarkable peace of one of the Earth’s widest, wildest vistas.

Born from years of experience, our camps are little oases in themselves – with comfortable netted beds, hot showers, and delicious candlelit dinners. Our main camp is perched on top of Elkanto Hill, 600 feet above the Milgis lugga, with private palm-thatched shelters, a secluded rock pool, and spectacular 360-degree views. There is nothing quite like falling asleep beneath the Milky Way, as the dying light paints the surrounding hills a hundred different hues – and the distant roar of a lion proclaims his reign over the land.
